Establishment and Operation of Overseas Afforestation Advanced Base

In order to fulfill the national policy of meeting 50% of domestic lumber demand with lumber produced overseas by accomplishing 1,000,000 ha of overseas afforestation by 2050, KOFPI has established overseas afforestation advanced bases in Southeast Asia and South America to develop a model for corporate overseas afforestation investment.

In order to secure wood biomass resources to reduce greenhouse gases and respond to energy crises, KOFPI has promoted the wood biomass demonstration afforestation project in Indonesia’s Java Island Semarang area. By inducing the activation of investment in overseas afforestation projects by private companies through such model development, KOFPI is contributing to the long-term and stable supply of wood biomass, a new and renewable energy.

Furthermore, KOFPI has been promoting an overseas afforestation demonstration project in the Caaguazú region in Paraguay since 2010 in order to prepare the basis and bridgehead for overseas afforestation expansion into South America. By leading the expansion into South America, an undeveloped region, KOFPI is reducing the investment risks of companies interested in overseas afforestation and inducing the activation of investment in overseas afforestation in Central and South America by providing information regarding afforestation and exploring forestry cooperation projects.

Overseas Afforestation Investment Support

KOFPI provides information related to overseas afforestation to companies in order to activate investment in overseas afforestation. KOFPI publishes a booklet by collecting information on and analyzing the investment environment of major overseas afforestation investing countries and potential subject countries, and it has established an integrated information system using the collected information. Furthermore, KOFPI provides consulting to companies wishing to invest in overseas afforestation and operates the Overseas Forest Resources Development Council, contributing to the establishment of a network between companies.

KOFPI has published the 「Overseas Forestry Investment Guidebook」 for 13 countries including Vietnam, Laos, the Philippines, Myanmar, Chile, Indonesia, Paraguay, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Brazil, Ecuador, Argentina, and Uruguay and distributed it to major relevant agencies. It has also published the 「Major Overseas Afforestation Tree Species and Useful Tropical Plant Resources Guide」, which reflects the industry needs. Combining such information and other data related to overseas afforestation investment, KOFPI operates the Overseas Forest Investment Information Service.

KOFPI serves as the pivot of domestic forest investment companies through the Overseas Forest Resources Development Council founded in June 2013, and it is establishing a network between companies in order to respond jointly to the rapidly changing forest investment environment. KOFPI implements projects to support investing companies, such as working sessions, topical seminars, workshops, and overseas afforestation site training programs; thus contributing to the activation of overseas forest investment.
